AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - With it being summertime, kids have more free time on their hands, which means more time to read.

Friends of the Augusta Library invited people to Dave and Buster’s for a summer reading kickoff on Saturday.

There was a petting zoo, live music, vendors and an author you could meet.

Hundreds of people showed up with their families to celebrate the start of summer with some encouragement to start reading and win prizes.

We spoke with one of the organizers, who says the library is an important part of the community.

“This was something that the community, as I say, the library is a community-based place. It is the center of the community, so being able to have the kids come to a safe place and actually be experienced to all of these great things and cultures, which eventually leads to literacy and exploration of their reading,” said Emanuel Sinclair Mitchell, library director.

Library leaders say they want this event to continue, and this one not to be the only one.
