WAGENER, SC. (WRDW/WAGT) - Just months after Wagener-Salley High School relocated across town, the school is planning to put all of its athletic facilities on the same property.

A project totaling over $15 million would bring an eight-lane track, as well as new fields for football, softball, and baseball to the school’s new campus.

Currently, the old campus contains the active facilities for the War Eagles football, softball, and baseball teams.

“They definitely need a lot of upgrades, and I believe that they probably weighed the financials and opportunity to have some something that would explode in the community, as far as having something that people could be proud of,” said Wagener-Salley’s head football coach, Blaze Gillespie.

If the plan proves successful, the facilities would be located on a work-ready area right behind the high school.

The blueprints suggest that the new football stadium will be named after long-time high school principal, J.O. Brown, and will have a capacity of around 1,200 spectators.

“It would be directly impactful,” said Gillespie. “They have wanted something like this for a very long time and now they’re actually getting the chance and opportunity to have it.”

While the project is still in the design phase, it does have an estimated completion date of January 2027 for softball and baseball, with the football field following in June 2027.

The new school already features top of the line basketball and volleyball courts, along with a dedicated wrestling room and weight room.

A sign of commitment that the War Eagles are ready to fly into the future of high school athletics.
