Augusta National stays closed to patrons much of Monday
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Due to bad weather and the current forecast, Augusta National Golf Club was closed to patrons for much of Monday.
The day’s practice round was suspended late Monday morning and the course was evacuated.
Just before 3 p.m., Augusta National said there would be no reopening.
However, purchasers of Monday practice round tickets will be sent refunds in May and will be guaranteed the opportunity to purchase 2026 Monday practice round tickets.
“We are disappointed our patrons could not fully enjoy today’s practice round, but the safety of everyone at Augusta National is our highest priority and was the determining factor in the decision to cancel,” said Fred Ridley, chairman of Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament. “We look forward to welcoming back our Monday patrons next year, as well as celebrating a wonderful 89th Masters Tournament ahead of us this week.”
The weather had been looming over the fun like a literal dark cloud.
With the CSRA under a FIRST ALERT for possible severe weather and flash flooding, Augusta National last night decided to the gate opening this morning.
But then the staff decided to let patrons in at 8 a.m. but keep an eye on the weather.
News 12 meteorologists had issued a FIRST ALERT for overnight Sunday and Monday for the risk of flash flood and possibly a few strong to severe thunderstorms.
The Augusta area is in marginal risk (5%) of excessive rainfall and a marginal category (Level 1 of 5) for severe thunderstorms capable of damaging wind from late Sunday through the day Monday.
Monday was scheduled as the first day of practice rounds for participants in the 89th Masters Tournament.
Luckily, Drive Chip and Put National Finals were finished.
