Congressional Republicans split on differing plans to enact Trump agenda
WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - Congressional Republicans are now split on how best to help President Donald Trump enact some of his biggest policy proposals, with two competing budget plans emerging out of the House and Senate.
House Republicans unveiled their budget plan on Wednesday which calls for cutting taxes, slashing spending and new funding for border security and defense.
But the Senate continued forging ahead with its own budget resolution after the release of the House plan. The upper chamber has been working on a two-step plan that would fund some of the president’s priorities on border and defense spending first, then would implement tax cuts at a later date.
“There’s only one plan that delivers all of the commitments and priorities that President Trump has, and that’s the House plan,” said House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA).
Senate Budget Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-SC) urged House Republicans to consider the Senate plan if they cannot move ahead with their own plan.
“To my colleagues in the House, I hope you can one big, beautiful bill, meeting the priorities of President Trump and what we’ve been promising to do as a party. But we got to move on this issue,” said the senator.
House Democrats, meanwhile, spoke out against their counterpart’s plan on Wednesday and highlighted that Medicaid and other government programs could face significant cuts under the proposal.
“The Republican majority is proposing 2 trillion in spending cuts that include significant decreases to Medicaid, to the ACA, food assistance, student loans and sustainable energy programs,” said Rep. Jimmy Panetta, (D-CA). “Cuts that will make it harder on working families to afford college, to access health care and to put food on the table."
