Police arrest 2nd suspect in Aiken murder case
AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - Aiken Department of Public Safety has arrested a second suspect in connection with the shooting death of the shooting death of William Lee Mathis Jr.
Investigators have charged Tristen Jersey McCarty, 17, of Trenton, with accessory before the fact to murder, and accessory after the fact to murder, according to the Aiken Department of Public Safety on Monday.

Since mid-April 2022, there’s been a wave of homicides and other violent crimes sweeping the CSRA. Although as the largest city, Augusta has been hit especially hard, the crime wave is affecting places large and small.

McCarty was the driver of a white 2000 Ford Explorer, and drove the co-defendant - Sabastyen Miles Greene, 22, was a enger, according to the arrest warrants.

Greene approached the victim, attempted the robbery and then shot the victim in the chest, according to the arrest warrants.
McCarty was stopped and waited for Greene, the arrest warrants state. He allowed Greene back into the vehicle and fled the scene - driving to Greene’s residence.
Hours after the first suspect’s name and photo were released, he surrendered to authorities in connection to the crime in December.
Greene was wanted on charges of murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, authorities said Friday.
Police made that announcement, and he turned himself in at 2 p.m., authorities said.
He was booked into the Aiken County Detention Center.
Aiken Department of Public Safety officers responded to Columbia Avenue and Chesterfield Street for a health and safety check after receiving a call at 10:41 p.m. on the day of the crime.
Officers arrived and found Mathis, 42, of Aiken, who had been shot. He was taken to a hospital and later declared dead.
