Deputy injured, suspect killed in Atlanta neighborhood shootout

The GBI is investigating after a suspect died and a deputy was injured in a shootout Monday.

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - An off-duty Fulton County deputy was injured and an armed suspect was killed in a shootout in southwest Atlanta late Monday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s office.

One person was transported to the hospital after a Monday night shooting in Augusta, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident began around 5 p.m., when two people flagged down Lt. Gerald Johnson after running out of the Easy Rental furniture rental business at 637 Lee Street in the West End neighborhood, Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat said during a Monday evening news conference.

Labat said one of the people had been shot.

Johnson then reportedly encountered a suspect armed with an assault-type rifle, and he exchanged gunfire with the suspect.

1 killed in shooting at Honduran Consulate near Atlanta

One person was killed and another was injured in a shooting at the Honduran Consulate building near Atlanta on Monday afternoon, according to police.

Police said two people were shot, one fatally, at the Consulate General of Honduras in Atlanta...

The suspect was killed during the shootout and Johnson was wounded. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with a non-life-threatening injury to his hand, and was released after being treated.

Labat said Johnson started working with the sheriff’s office in 1993, and later retired in 2017 before returning part-time in 2022. He was working at his second job at the time of the incident Monday.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has been asked to investigate, which is standard in shootings involving law enforcement officers.

The Atlanta Police Department is investigating what led up to the shooting. MARTA police are also assisting in the investigation.
