ALBANY, Ga. (WALB/Gray News) - A father of four from Georgia rushed to save his 3-year-old twins when he woke up to flames inside the family’s home. While he managed to get them out safely, he was severely burned in the process.

Caliph Cason, a father of four, is recovering in the hospital from second-and third-degree burns. His wife, Danielle Cason, says he had just fed their children and put them down for a nap last Tuesday morning. The father dozed off himself and woke up to flames inside the family’s Albany home, WALB reports.

Danielle Cason says her husband saved the lives of their 3-year-old twins, but he was severely burned across 35% of his body. He was airlifted to a burn center in Augusta, where he will undergo extensive surgery and skin grafting procedures.

“His skin was just falling off of his body,” Danielle Cason said.

However, she says she thanks God, as she knows it could’ve been a lot worse.

“The scene afterwards was so horrific,” Danielle Cason said. “The blood and the skin from my kitchen to my twins’ door literally told the story of the suffering that he went through. He’s a dad before anything else, and he showed that. He’s definitely a hero in our book.”

She went on to say, “I’ve never seen that type of love that a person can exude. The adrenaline that he operated on is nothing short of a father’s love.”

A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family with medical expenses. Caliph Cason is a type-1 insulin-dependent diabetic, and the funds will also help the family of five travel back and forth from Albany to Augusta to visit him in the hospital.

“We have no immediate family here in Georgia, so to see the community come out on behalf of us? Everyone has pulled together as a team. It is loved, appreciated and it definitely does not go unnoticed,” Danielle Cason said.

The family’s GoFundMe had reached just over half of its $10,000 goal on Tuesday morning.
