Finding Solutions: Project Refresh holds first event since Hurricane Helene
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Food, haircuts, showers and clothes are just some of what you could get at this month’s Project Refresh Shower Day.
It’s a monthly event, and the first one held after the storm.
People poured into the May Park Community Center, where organizers are finding solutions to meet the needs of hundreds of people.
It’s a one-stop shop for whatever you might need.
Local non-profit provides angel gowns to those who suffer from infant loss
October is pregnancy and infant loss awareness month and one local group has made it their mission to make sure families know they are here if they need them.
“We have some food, we have haircuts. The showers are here. We have medical screenings, and a lot of vendors are here. It’s just a wonderful excuse to get together to have a little love,” said Lisa Ann Wheeler, patient navigator for the Georgia Department of Public Health.
Project Refresh Shower Day has been going on monthly for over a year now.
“We had 550 people one time, 350 another time. I would guess probably 400 people have come through today and we needed more space and parking, so this was the perfect spot,” said Wheeler.
John Fisher has made this event part of his monthly routine.
Toys for Tots helps provide Christmas for kids
The end of the year is creeping up on us, and some organizations are already looking on to Christmas.

“This event is very great to have people come out and open these doors because a lot of homeless people live in this area or underprivileged people live in this area have a chance to get things that are essential to life, soap, toiletries, resources,” said Fisher.
Last month’s event was canceled because of Helene.
Project Refresh says being able to get back out into the community is a great thing when they’re used to giving about 25 showers.
Kimberlee Bugher, president of Project Refresh, said: “Some of the people missed out when we weren’t able to provide those and get our truck out from what it was so being able to be back is a blessing to check on our people too. We are friends with a lot of the people we see.”
Fisher encourages those who didn’t make it out to come in November. “You’ll be blessed. There’s always a chef here with a meal and it was good this morning so you will get fed but come out and take care of yourself,” he said.
The next event is November 15 at May Park.
