AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Golden Harvest held a produce distribution for Georgia families to get fresh produce.

For a couple of hours on Thursday each car could’ve received enough produce to feed two families.

Volunteers gave out more than 72-thousand pounds of food including, apples, plums, peaches and more.

For the next month, Golden Harvest is ing a national push to end hunger in our local communities.

Golden Harvest is asking the community to get involved and spread awareness this month, and one way you can do that is by wearing orange.

One in seven people, including one in four children, are struggling with food insecurity in the CSRA.

“The highest rates of food insecurity that we’ve seen in 15 years,” said Amy Breitmann, CEO of Golden Harvest.

It’s why Golden Harvest is spreading awareness this September.

“Just inviting the community to take action against hunger,” said Britmann.

Breitmann says ending hunger is a collective effort.

“We’re pleading with the community to come alongside us because it takes more funding, more food, more volunteers, more donors,” she said.

If you aren’t able to volunteer or donate, you can do something simple to spread awareness.

“Asking the community to wear orange today, and really all month, to just bring awareness to the issue,” said Breitmann.

Golden Harvest says they are fighting hunger in a lot of ways.

“We pack thousands of backpacks for children and have boxes for seniors every month here internally, and so we also serve hundreds down at our soup kitchen every single day,” said Breitmann.

She says seeing community involvement is inspiring.

“To see how many people it really takes to come around this issue and make a tremendous impact,” said Breitmann.
