AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - It’s a facility centered around learning.

The Dr. Paulette Harris Literacy Center located in the HUB for Community Innovation is helping kids and adults get the instruction they need when it comes to reading and writing.

While it has a steady number of people coming weekly, its staff would like to see more.

Linda and Jacob Butler have been coming to the center for a year.

“I think that the HUB is a great place. It was needed in this area, and I have enjoyed being here,” Linda Butler said.

The siblings are learning basic computer and technology skills together.

That’s something Jacob Butler says is different than when he was in school.

“In high school, I took typing, but it was on the Remington typewriter, so this is really different, and I learned how to type pretty good on that,” he said. “Years went by and I gave it up, so I got into this program here and I’m really enjoying it.”

Although some things may look different, the outcome is the same.

The center focuses on reading and writing. as well, with the goal being to get people up to a high school reading level.

“There’s a lot of individualized curriculum that we have that will assist people in exactly what they’re struggling in,” said Sam Klein, business operations specialist, at the center. “There’s no stigma in coming here to the center to better yourself and that’s what the HUB is here for and Harris Literacy Center.”

A lot of the instructors are volunteers, meeting weekly to give students one-on-one instruction.

“I’ve always loved teaching adults, and one of the biggest reasons is they want to be here,” said Sharon Arnold, volunteer digital instructor.

About 17 adults are enrolled in classes now, and the goal is to reach more than 20 by the end of the year – all at no cost to students.

“People should get interested in it and learn as much as they can,” Jacob Butler said.

The center also partners with Augusta Technical College to offer free classes for people pursuing a GED or learning English as a second language.

Whether you are an adult or in kindergarten through 12th grade, you can utilize these services.

Organizers want to grow the programs and eventually offer various workshops.

They are in need of volunteers, as well.
