Gunshots fired outside Laney-Westside football game

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - According to Westside and Laney high school coaches, there was a shooting outside of the Lucy C. Laney stadium during the game on Friday night.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were dispatched to the area of Augusta Court and Blounts Avenue for multiple gun shots near the Laney High School Football Field where a game was being played.

Both coaches say their teams are okay.

Friday was the first game of the football season.

The sheriff’s office says there have no victims located.

While on the scene, deputies found cartridge casings and property damage.

A woman was found shot dead in Augusta, the latest victim in a two-year outbreak of deadly crime that’s claimed more than 170 lives across the CSRA.

A News 12 crew on the scene says there were bullet holes along a nearby apartment complex.

Deputies say at this time, it appears all the gunshots were fired outside the stadium.

How many students have been caught with weapons this week

There have been multiple cases of students being caught with weapons this week in Richmond County schools.

This isn’t the first time a shooting happened outside of this stadium. In September 2022, two people were arrested in connection to “shots fired” at Lucy C. Laney Football Stadium.

The gunfire comes amid an outbreak of violent crime that’s claimed more than 170 lives in a little over two years across the CSRA.

The crime outbreak has affected communities large and small, but as the biggest city in the region, Augusta has been hit especially hard.

Authorities have blamed much of the problem on gangs.
