AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The class of 2027 Peach State Scholars program pinning ceremony wrapped up on Friday.

Four years ago, Peach State partnered with the Medical College of Georgia to start the accelerated program.

The students will dedicate six years of practice in our local communities in fields like OBGYN care, general surgery and family medicine.

Rural Health Services quickly outgrew its current facility and decided to construct a new building across the street to expand services.

The chairman of the program says this is a special act of service for these scholars.

“Dedicating your life to medical service, particularly in rural and underserved communities is special. What we want these students to know is that it’s not only needed but valued. So, we are willing to go hand in hand with them to ensure that the cost isn’t a barrier to them doing what is desperately needed,” said Wade Rakes.

The current class had 12 students, but their impact will serve thousands.
