COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCSC) - The state’s highest court will hear a challenge filed by Planned Parenthood against South Carolina’s six-week abortion ban.

An appellate document certifies a June 20 announcement where the case will head back into courtrooms. Planned Parenthood will question the ability to determine when abortions are no longer permitted during a pregnancy.

The basis of those inquiries compares the input of lawmakers and abortion providers. While the law is listed as six weeks, providers estimate closer to nine.

McMaster reveals 21 vetoes to South Carolina state budget

Gov. Henry McMaster announced he would make 21 line-item vetoes to South Carolina’s Fiscal Year 2024-2025 state budget.

This comes two years after Roe v. Wade was overturned and a year after the courts upheld the state’s Fetal Heartbeat law by a 4-1 vote. South Carolina sits as one of three states with a six-week ban in place.

Prior to June, South Carolina sat as the only all-male Supreme Court in the United States, causing contention about addressing the issue of abortion. Court of Appeals Judge Letitia Verdin will now take the place of Chief Justice Don Beatty.

Beatty previously wrote dissenting opinions about the legislation, claiming the law uses language that does not provide clarity on when the ban begins. Records of Verdin’s stance on the ban were not immediately attainable.

The South Carolina Supreme Court has not yet set a date for oral arguments.
