COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - The interim director of the new South Carolina Department of Environmental Services, Myra Reece, spoke Monday to officially launch the agency and explain its roles and responsibilities to the public.

The news conference took place at 10 a.m. outside the new DES headquarters at 2600 Bull St. in Columbia.

DES is one of the two new agencies formed after legislators voted in May to shut down the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC). The agency will be responsible for protecting and preserving the environment and ensure South Carolina residents have clean air, land, water and coastal resources.

The other new agency formed after DHEC closed down is the Department of Public Health.

Meanwhile, the South Carolina Department of Agriculture took over several food safety duties from DHEC.

SCDA said they will be establishing a new Retail Food Safety Department, which will regulate restaurant kitchens, grocery store delis, caterers, school cafeterias, some convenience stores and more.

The department’s existing Food Safety Program will also regulate new items that used to be under DHEC’s purview, including ice, soft drinks, bottled water, frozen desserts, butter and cheese.
