Lyons and Matson were candidates in the runoff for the bench post after coming within less than 4,000 votes between the two.
Election Day: Voters head to polls for Richmond County sheriff runoff
It's Election Day for some runoff elections in Georgia, and one of the biggest races we're going to be tracking throughout the day is the Richmond County sheriff race.

Lyons has had a practice in Augusta for almost 40 years. He ran for against Judge Jesse Stone in the last election.
“The main thing is working for the people. Because I believe that the community, the citizens of Burke and Richmond counties, that they deserve a judge who has a reputation for working hard, and not one that someone looks the game when they reach the bench,” said Lyons.
This is Matson’s first election. He served as a clerk for the superior court after graduating law school.
“I got to see 70 different kinds of cases and just getting to see how they dealt with them. You know, being respectful to everyone, no matter what walk of life, what brings you into court. Just just there calm demeanor, and ability to deal with all kinds of different issues,” said Matson.
Matson worked for Judge Brown and Judge Overstreet while as a clerk.
Lyons’ son also serves as the Chief Deputy Clerk in Augusta.
