Aiken school board chair discusses superintendent candidates
AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - Three candidates are left for the Aiken County superintendent position, and the community has provided .
The chair of the board spoke to us about the process to get to this point.
“Without a doubt, the folks that are named in the three finalists are qualified for this job,” said Aiken County School Board Chair Cameron Nuessle.
He says narrowing the pool of candidates down from 18 to 3 was a months-long process.
“We contracted with a search firm to conduct the superintendent search. The job was posted nationally. We chose to interview six of those applicants. That process led us to name these three finalists,” he said.
Pages and pages worth of community input show varying opinions on what qualities the next superintendent should have.

“This district is constantly held back with the ‘This is the way we’ve always done it’ mentality. We need actual leaders who will make us better,” said one entry.
Another says, “The new superintendent should be one who follows the same general path but can make some changes.”
Nuessle says the board is considering everyone’s opinion.
“I guarantee you that the board read every single word of that to try to have an informed, you know, to know what people were thinking as they processed go through this process,” he said.
It’s why they’re allowing you and your students to meet the finalists next week at their community reception on Feb. 3.
“This Board of Education has the best interests of our students at heart,” said Nuessle.
He says their priority is the students as they look for the next leader to fill the seat.
