SYLVANIA, Ga. - A dispute over a wounded dog turned deadly for a man in Screven County who became the 41st known victim of a deadly crime surge that’s been sweeping the CSRA.

This latest deadly shooting happened around 12:11 p.m. Sunday on Friendship Road in a mobile home park, according to authorities.

Roderick Denzell Jenkins, 29, was fatally shot and a 19-year-old woman was injured.

Investigators say the deceased man and others had gone to a home to confront the residents.

Blanche Barnes says her grandson was at her house Sunday when he shot an aggressive dog. She says the dog’s owner and other people came to her house within minutes.

“The screen door was open like that. And I was in the doorway like this. The girl was pushing on me and trying to get around into the house, trying to get to C.J., I guess,” Barnes said.

She says she called for her son Corey Morris Sr., who was in a back room.

“A shot was fired, a fatal wound, right off the bat. A girl in back of him also got shot with the same bullet,” Screven County Sheriff Mike Kile said.

The bullet struck and killed Jenkins, the dog’s owner.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents and sheriff’s investigators have questioned Morris but haven’t filed charges – something the family of Jenkins is upset with.

Kile says Jenkins should have reported the dog issue instead of confronting Morris.

“Bad things happen when tempers flare,” Kile said. “Ten years ago, they’d had had a fist fight and that would have been it.”
